Hibiscus syriacus, a deciduous shrub, is also known as Hardy Hibiscus, Rose of Sharon and Althea. Hardy in zones 5 through 9, Hibiscus perform at their best in full sun and well drained soil. While they will grow in partially sunny to light shady areas, their blooming may be limited. Damp and shaded areas will make them susceptible to fungal damage. Use one or two Hibiscus as specimen plants. Although they will lose their leaves in winter, they do make excellent privacy hedges in areas for summer use such as around swimming pools. Their unusually large blooms attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees from mid summer until frost. As they bloom much later than most other plants, they are also later to leaf out. Expect them to leaf out in late spring to early summer. Growing Tips: Blooms mid summer. Grows in any soil except very dry or very wet soils. Prune in late winter to early spring. Can be heavily pruned without problems. Fertilize in early spring by applying a slow release fertilizer specialized for trees and shrubs. Follow the label on the fertilizer for recommended rate of application.
